Training A New Puppy
Training a new puppy is important, since this is a critical stage of a dog's development. It will be an interesting, fun and rewarding experience for both you and your little friend.
There are several things to consider during this period, especially if you already notice a pattern developing. These include biting and chewing, jumping, socialization, barking or howling and pulling on the leash.
Social Skills
A social puppy is a happy puppy. Do not underestimate the importance of social skills for your puppy. He/she will grow up to be a happy, well-adjusted dog.
When your puppy becomes used to certain situations as an 'everyday' thing, they become more trustworthy. If not, they may react aggressively or defensively. This could cause problems.
Let him/her meet other dogs, people of both sexes, children as well as the elderly. Make sure to offer lots of praise. Just like humans, a puppy can develop phobias. Phobias can be extremely difficult to deal with.
Jumping
Jumping, especially if you have a large breed, may cause problems later on. Can you imagine a German shepherd jumping on and toppling a child or an old lady? You need to prevent a serious accident from happening.
Never pet or reward your puppy for jumping on someone. There is nothing wrong in telling someone NOT to allow it as well. Most people will understand. Gently take puppy's legs and put them back on the floor.
Housetraining
When you first get your puppy, if possible, you need to take him or her out many times a day. This is time well spent. You will avoid 'accidents' later on. It can take several months to truly housetrain puppy. Each puppy is different, just like each person is different. Some may learn quicker than others.
Sometimes, a puppy may pee when excited. YOU need to be patient. Take puppy out as often as you can. Praise when puppy pees outside. Offer a treat or toy immediately.
Confining puppy to a crate is a good way of teaching it control. If you are there to monitor puppy, you can gradually increase the length of time. Crate training is a great way of training your puppy.
Be Patient
Sometimes, it's also about training yourself. You must remember to be patient with your puppy. Never punish your puppy for not understanding. Give him or her more time.
Remember to give breaks as well. Several short sessions are a good way of training. You can always purchase books or DVDs on training a new puppy to help you help your best little buddy.
