It will take several weeks of sustained training. You need to be consistent. Remember that when your puppy does a good job, praise it immediately. You could even reward it with a treat or toy.

By repetition, your puppy will eventually learn that "it's a good thing I did. My master praised me". Dogs by nature love us humans and love to please us. When you let them know what a good job they did, you can see the joy in their faces!

Going Outside Is Always Best

Ideally, training your puppy to go to the toilet outside is always best. Puppies and dogs love to go out, plus they need the exercise too. They are also curious and want to discover everything!

You will need to take your puppy out frequently at first. It is little and won't have much control at this point. Accidents will happen, you can't get away from that, so take a deep breath!

You should get into the habit of using verbal cues early on. It doesn't really matter what word you choose, as long as you help your puppy associate it with the act of going to the toilet.

When it does go, praise it and fuss over it immediately. Rinse and repeat! This has to be done many times and your puppy will eventually understand, including the verbal commands.

Tell 'Tail' Signs

There are certain signs you will notice about your puppy when it needs to do its business. It may start sniffing around or it might be circling an area. It wants to go! Try taking it out immediately.

There are other classic times of when a puppy needs to be taken to the toilet. These include getting up and after meals. Sometimes, after a good play, it may want to go. It's also a good idea to take it out just before bedtime.

One thing you can do, once your puppy gets the idea, is to hang a little bell on the door. Every time it wants to go out, it will ring it. These items are not very expensive at all.

A Word Of Advice

It's never a good idea to hit or even yell at your puppy when an accident happens. This is more so especially when you only find the 'accident' later. It's not fair, the puppy won't understand and it certainly doesn't deserve it.

Stay focused on the big picture. There are other ways of potty training puppies, such as using the crate. For more ideas, you can get the help of top professionals by purchasing some books or DVDS.
