Potty Training A Puppy
Potty training a puppy requires patience on your part. It may take several weeks to accomplish this mission. However, never rub their noses in it. There is no reason to do this, despite what anyone says.
Always remember that they are just babies and need to learn. They will have little control and accidents are bound to happen. They won't learn this overnight. It will take time and you need to accept that.
It's About Time!
When you get a new puppy, it needs to be taken out frequently. However, there are certain times that you can look out for, for example, when it's time to get up.
Another classic time is after meals. Sometimes, after they play, they may want to go do their business. But generally, upon waking up and after eating is a good indication of when they need to use the toilet.
Using A Crate
You can use a crate as part of potty training. Generally, a dog will not eliminate in its place of rest. You use a crate when you're away for a while. This gets the puppy used to self-control. The moment you're back, take it out immediately.
If you don't, there's a chance it might eliminate inside your home. The moment it does its business outdoors - you got it - lots of praise! This will reinforce this behavior and will leave no room for confusion.
Always remember to praise or reprimand immediately. This is how it will learn. If you leave it too late, the puppy won't make a connection.
Using Paper
Some people opt for old newspapers. This is fine as well, although ideally, it's best to take them outside. Sometimes, this may not always be possible. If it's a bitterly cold day when frostbite can set in after a few minutes, then forget it!
The elderly may not be able to take their dog out often, so a designated area covered with paper will do the job. Extra patience and training is required, so the dog knows that it should do it outside, but inside is alright as long as it's done in a specific place.
One thing you should never do is punish your puppy. Don't hit them. Don't yell. That's not teaching. Your puppy won't understand. It will be afraid of your approaching hand. It will be afraid of YOU.
Your enthusiasm and positive tone are effective tools in teaching your puppy. With patience and good teaching methods, you will find that potty training a puppy is a wonderful experience and it will strengthen the bond between you and your puppy.
