Leash Training A Puppy

Leash training a puppy can actually begin indoors. Try teaching the little one in your house or apartment first before progressing outdoors. You can use treats or toys as a reward for doing the right thing.

You may need to ignore him/her for not walking while the leash is on. That's fine. You're trying to teach it to walk with a leash on. If you shower attention, the puppy will soon realize that it gets your attention by NOT doing what it's supposed to.

Proper Leash Training

Dogs are curious creatures by nature. They're always investigating and sniffing things. The same goes for puppies. It's in their nature to go here or there without a care for their safety.

That's where we come in. We need to look after them and train them, so as to reduce this behavior outside where it can be dangerous. The sight of a bouncing tennis ball may be too much to handle. It's best to be safe on the road.

"I Hate My Collar!"

Puppy needs to get used to a collar first. It might not like it. It may try to fight it and really act up. Be patient. Try not to give in and take it off, otherwise it will think that whenever it throws a tantrum, the collar comes off.

You might want to consider a Buddy Belt. These collars are great because they reduce strain on the neck and are so easy to use.

Once progress is made, it's time to add the leash. Be prepared for the leash to be chewed to death! You might consider a cheap one to start with, because this leash is bound to get damaged.

Use this starter leash only for this training. Puppy chewing the leash will likely damage it and you don't want to use a leash like this outdoors. Let it get used to the leash. Again, be patient!

"Pulling Gets Me Nowhere!"

It's quite normal for your puppy to pull on the leash while walking. When this happens, stop! This will eventually tell him/her that it's pointless to pull. This will eventually be eliminated and end potential problems for both you and your puppy (later on).

Leash training a puppy does require work and patience, but it will be rewarding for both of you. You take part and watch your puppy learn and grow up to be an obedient dog. You feel proud like a parent as you shape its future.

As you progress to other forms of training, your puppy (and eventually, dog) will not forget the rewards and praise it received from you, making future training even more rewarding for both of you.
