Dog Agility Training
Dog agility training is one of the most fun things that you and your dog can do together. It's not just the training itself, but if you're interested in entering competitions, it will truly be an unforgettable experience for both of you.
Dogs love to be trained and please their master. They enjoying performing and they enjoy the praise and rewards that go with it. You'll get a thrill as you watch your dog successfully learn all these new things!
Having Fun At Home
There are a couple of directions you can go as far as dog agility is concerned. You can have fun at home with your dog and your family, or you could take part in competitions, for the more serious, competitive owners.
If you prefer to 'just let your dog be a dog' and have fun, then at least there is no pressure on either of you. Pressure can be a great rush for some people, especially competitive ones.
There is equipment you can purchase to train your dog in your garden. Obviously, if you have a lot of space, then you have greater flexibility and your dog has more it can do.
Just remember to be patient. Introduce obstacles slowly, for example with jump bars. Gradually increase the spacing and distance. You can even train indoors, especially when it's colder. For example, a few minutes of weave training a day is good enough.
Agility Training For Competition
For the competitive amongst you, this would be heaven for you and your dog! It does require great teamwork, trust and respect for each other. Training is more rigorous. A proper run means nothing knocked down, staying on course and making the time.
Certain things will be easier to teach, like making your dog run through a tunnel. Nothing like dangling a toy at the other end to get their eyes wide open and full of fire!
There are so many techniques that it may be a good idea to get tips and techniques from DVDS or videos and books. Remember, you need to know the obstacle sequences as well, since you'll be leading and prompting your dog all the time.
Occasionally, your dog will make a mistake. YOU will then need to step in and call out to your dog and lead it back into the proper sequence. It's not just about training your dog; it's also about training yourself.
A Final Word
Competition is obviously more expensive. The equipment has to meet proper standards. You could also join a club that has dog agility training for a monthly fee. Whatever your competitive needs, the options are out there.
